Israel Starts a War
JERUSALEM- In a big surprise this morning during a Jewish holiday, Hamas fighters fired many rockets and sent fighters into Israeli towns near Gaza. They killed many people and shocked the country. Israel said it’s now in a war with Hamas and started airstrikes in Gaza, promising to make them pay a big price.
A few hours after the attack started, Hamas fighters were still in gunfights inside some Israeli towns near Gaza. Israel’s national rescue service said over 40 people died, and many got hurt, making it the worst attack in Israel for a long time. Some Israeli soldiers and regular people were also captured and taken into Gaza, but we don’t know how many yet.
In the Gaza Strip, Israel’s response has caused the death of at least 198 people, and over 1,610 have been injured, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.
The attack surprised Israelis because it was very strong, well-planned, and happened at an unexpected time. They saw pictures of Hamas fighters taking Israeli soldiers and regular people into Gaza on motorcycles. They also saw what looked like captured Israeli military vehicles being driven around the streets. Videos on social media showed a scene where it seemed like at least one Israeli soldier was killed inside Gaza. A group of angry Palestinians was seen shouting “God is Greatest” while dragging and trampling the soldier.
This attack could lead to a bigger fight, like what happened in the past between Hamas and Israel. Those conflicts caused a lot of death and destruction in Gaza, as well as days of rockets being fired at Israeli towns.
“We are in a war,” said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on TV. He announced a big army mobilization, making it clear that it’s not just a small operation or a round of fighting, but a full-scale war.
He also said, “The enemy will have to pay a very big price.” Israel plans to respond with such powerful force that the enemy has never experienced before.

The leader of Hamas’ military wing, Mohammed Deif, said they launched the attack because of several reasons: the blockade of Gaza, Israeli raids in the West Bank, violence at a holy site in Jerusalem, attacks by settlers on Palestinians, and more Israeli settlements being built. He called this morning’s attack the beginning of “Operation Al-Aqsa Storm.”
In a recorded message, Mohammed Deif, who doesn’t usually appear in public, said, “We’ve had enough.” He called on Palestinians from different places to join the fight, saying that today, the people are starting their revolution again.
During a meeting with security officials, Netanyahu said the first thing they need to do is get rid of enemy infiltrators. After that, they want to make the enemy pay a heavy price. They also want to make sure no other militant groups join the war by strengthening their defenses in different areas.
The attack on Simchat Torah, a usually happy day when Jews finish reading the Torah, brought back bad memories from 1973. About 50 years ago, during the Yom Kippur, which is the holiest day for Jews, Israel’s enemies surprised them with an attack in the Middle East war.
People started to compare this situation to one of the worst times in Israel’s history. This made critics of Netanyahu and his far-right supporters more vocal. They had promised to be tougher against Gaza threats. People who write about politics criticized the government for not being ready for what looked like a very well-planned and coordinated attack by Hamas.
Israel’s military attacked places in Gaza because they were hit by around 2,500 rockets. These rockets caused alarms to go off as far north as Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, which is about 80 kilometers away. The Israeli forces were fighting with Hamas fighters who managed to get into Israel in at least seven places. These fighters crossed over the fence and some even came in with paragliders, the army reported.
On Israeli TV, they showed videos of explosions breaking the Gaza-Israel border fence. After that, it seemed like Palestinian gunmen came into Israel on motorcycles, and there were reports that some used pickup trucks too.
Hamas released videos that seemed to show at least three Israelis captured alive. The military didn’t share more information about injuries or kidnappings as they were still fighting against the infiltrators.
Around 561 injured people are receiving medical care in Israeli hospitals, and out of them, at least 77 are in very critical condition. This information is based on reports from hospitals and public statements.
The recent attack by Hamas seems to have taken a long time to plan. It’s happening during a time when tensions between Israel and the Palestinians have been increasing. Israel’s government has been building more settlements in the West Bank, which has led to conflicts and made many Palestinians leave their homes. There have also been tensions around a holy place in Jerusalem.
The Israeli Defense Minister, Yoav Gallant, said in a TV speech that Hamas made a big mistake and that Israel will win this war.
Western countries criticized the attack and supported Israel, while some others called for both sides to show restraint.
“The U.S. strongly condemns the unexpected attacks by Hamas terrorists on Israeli civilians,” said Adrienne Watson, a spokesperson for the U.S. National Security Council. “We support Israel and express our condolences for the lives lost.”
Watson mentioned that Jake Sullivan, the national security adviser, has talked with his Israeli counterpart, Tzachi Hanegbi.
Saudi Arabia, which has been discussing normalizing relations with Israel with the U.S., issued a statement. They called on both sides to be careful and expressed concern about the situation getting worse because of the ongoing occupation and Palestinian rights being denied.
The attack happened when Israel was already facing big problems within the country. There were protests and disagreements about changing the way the courts work. These protests brought many Israelis to the streets, and some military reservists didn’t want to volunteer, which worried people about the military’s readiness for battle and its ability to deter enemies.
Hamas’s fighters getting into southern Israel was a big step up in their actions. It made millions of Israelis stay in safe rooms, and cities and towns became empty because the roads near Gaza were closed. Both Israel’s rescue service and the Palestinian Health Ministry asked people to donate blood.
“We understand that this is a significant event,” said Lt. Col. Richard Hecht, a spokesman for the Israeli army. He mentioned that the Israeli military had called up the army reserves.
When asked about how Hamas managed to surprise the army, Hecht didn’t give a direct answer and said, “That’s a good question.”
Ismail Haniyeh, the leader of Hamas who lives in exile, said that Palestinian fighters were involved in a heroic operation to protect the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem and the many Palestinian prisoners held by Israel.
In Nahal Oz, a place close to the Gaza Strip, residents were very scared. They stayed inside, and they could hear gunshots even hours after the attack had started.
Mirjam Reijnen, a 42-year-old volunteer firefighter and mother of three in Nahal Oz, shared her feelings, saying, “When we hear rockets, we feel safer because we have the Iron Dome and safe rooms. But knowing that terrorists are in our communities is a different kind of fear.”
Israel has constructed a big fence along the Gaza border to stop intrusions. It goes deep underground and has cameras, high-tech sensors, and sensitive listening equipment.
All of this has happened after weeks of increased tension along the border between Israel and Gaza, as well as intense fighting in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.
The attack on Saturday is causing doubts about Netanyahu’s image as a security expert who would do whatever it takes to keep Israel safe.
