Cardinal George Pell is a retired Australian Catholic clergyman who served as the Archbishop of Sydney and later as the Prefect of the Secretariat for the Economy in the Vatican.
He was born on June 8, 1941 in Ballarat, Victoria, Australia.
In 1996, he was appointed as the Archbishop of Melbourne and in 2001, he became the Archbishop of Sydney.
In 2014, he was appointed by Pope Francis as the Prefect of the Secretariat for the Economy, making him the Vatican's chief financial officer and the third-highest-ranking official in the Catholic Church.
In December 2018, he was convicted of child sexual abuse and was sentenced to six years in prison.
In April 2020, his conviction was overturned by the High Court of Australia and he was released from prison.
He is the most senior Catholic official to be convicted of child sexual abuse.
He has consistently maintained his innocence, and has faced significant public criticism for his handling of child sexual abuse cases within the Church.
